SEO vs GEO vs AEO: What Is the Difference?
Search now has three layers: SEO, AEO and GEO. Here is what each one does, with a real example, a comparison table and a six-step checklist.
You search for your business on Google and rank well. Then you ask ChatGPT the same question, and it names three of your competitors. Did your SEO fail? No. Search now has three layers, and each one needs different work.
Those layers are SEO, AEO and GEO. The names look alike and vendors define them differently, so people mix them up. This guide explains SEO vs GEO vs AEO in plain words, with a real example for each one. I’m Noor Fatima, an AI-ready SEO specialist with more than five years in search.
What Is the Difference Between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO helps your pages rank on Google and earn clicks. AEO formats your content as short, direct answers that search features and assistants can lift out. GEO makes your brand easy for generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to find, trust and cite. SEO is the foundation, and the other two build on it.
What Are SEO, AEO and GEO? (With Real Examples)
What Is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the work of making your website easy for a search engine to find, read and trust, so your pages rank higher and earn clicks. It covers technical setup, page content, links and local signals. My guide to the types of SEO explains each part in plain words.
Real example: HubSpot and the keyword “crm.” Ahrefs studied HubSpot’s site and found that for “crm,” a term with about 183,000 monthly searches, HubSpot’s product page never reached the top spot. HubSpot later published a plain explainer page for people who wanted a definition first. Ahrefs used the case to show that search intent matters even for a very strong domain. So SEO is not only about authority. Your page must also match what the searcher wants.
What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring content so it can appear as the direct answer to a question. That includes featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice answers and AI answers. In practice, it means a short, clear answer placed right under a question-style heading. Because the answer shows on the results page, many of these searches end without a click, so AEO is often called a zero-click strategy.
Real example: the AI Overview for this very topic. When I searched “seo vs geo vs aeo” on Google in November 2026, the AI Overview already answered in two sentences. It said SEO drives traffic through links, AEO captures zero-click answers and voice results, and GEO gets your brand cited by AI tools. It credited the Digital Marketing Institute as a source. That is the format AEO aims for: a plain, self-contained answer that a machine can lift out. It also shows the risk. If your page only repeats the basic definition, the answer box has already given it away.
What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your content and brand easy for generative AI tools to retrieve, trust and cite when they write an answer. Those tools include ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode.
The term comes from a 2023 research paper by researchers at Princeton, IIT Delhi, Georgia Tech and the Allen Institute for AI. The paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, was accepted at KDD 2024. It reported that some tactics raised visibility in generative answers by up to 40%, and that results varied by topic area. So GEO is young, and no single tactic works everywhere.
GEO does not replace SEO either. Google’s guidance on AI features says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special markup is needed. A page still has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
Real example: HubSpot in AI answers. HubSpot calls its program AEO, but its goal, being named and cited inside AI answers, is what this guide calls GEO. From June 2025, its team tracked how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and similar tools mentioned and cited the brand. It then published comparison articles and a glossary, added FAQs, tables and schema to product pages, and had advocates answer buyer questions on Reddit. In its AI search case study, HubSpot reports becoming the most visible CRM in AI search, with citations up 433%. Read those numbers carefully. They are HubSpot’s own, they come without baselines, and the article promotes HubSpot’s own tool. The tactics are still a useful model: build pages AI tools want to cite, and earn mentions on pages they already trust.
A note on terms: some writers use “AIO” or “AI SEO” as an umbrella for all three, and others use “AIO” for AI Overviews. This guide uses only SEO, AEO and GEO.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO Comparison Table
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Rank pages and earn clicks | Be the direct answer on the results page | Be named and cited in AI-generated answers |
| Where it appears | Organic results | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice answers | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, AI Mode |
| Best content format | Full pages that match search intent | Short answer under a question heading, then detail | Factual passages with named entities, sources and original data |
| What helps most | Crawlability, relevance, links, page experience, E-E-A-T | Direct wording and clean structure | Accurate facts, clear entities, mentions on trusted pages |
| How you measure it | Rankings, impressions, clicks | Snippet and People Also Ask presence | Mention rate, citation rate, share of voice |
| Maturity | Established | Partly documented | Emerging |
SEO is mature, AEO is partly documented, and GEO is still young. That is why I treat SEO as the base and add the other two on top.
Which Searches Trigger SEO, AEO and GEO?
Search intent decides which layer matters most. These three searches show the pattern:
- “Dentist near me” or a brand name: classic results and local listings, so SEO leads.
- “What is a CRM”: a definition query, so a direct answer under a question heading (AEO) leads.
- “Best CRM for a small business”: AI tools compare and recommend brands, so GEO matters most.
How Do You Optimize One Page for SEO, AEO and GEO?
You do not need three separate pages. You need one page that does these six things:
- Keep it indexable. A page Google cannot crawl or index cannot rank or support an AI answer.
- Open each section with a short answer. Put 40 to 60 words under a question-style heading, then add detail.
- Make every key sentence self-contained. Name the brand, product or place instead of writing “it” or “this,” so a lifted sentence still makes sense.
- Add first-hand proof. Use your own data, process, a named author and a short bio.
- Cite sources and refresh the page. Link to primary sources and update key pages every year.
- Earn mentions elsewhere. Roundups, reviews and communities help AI tools trust you.
I apply this checklist in my AI-ready SEO services, which cover both Google rankings and AI answers.
How Do You Measure SEO, AEO and GEO?
Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the same Search Console Performance report as regular results. So SEO and AEO appear in tools you already use. GEO needs a manual test. You run the same 10 to 20 buyer questions in several AI tools, then log how often your brand is named and cited. My guide on how to measure AI search visibility gives the full method and formulas.

Is SEO Dead in 2026?
No. SEO is the foundation of the other two. Google says AI features follow the same SEO fundamentals, and an unindexed page cannot be a supporting link. What changed is the scoreboard. Rankings alone no longer show your full visibility, so you also track mentions and citations.
FAQs
Is AEO the same as GEO?
No. AEO targets the direct answer on a results page. GEO targets the citation or mention inside an answer an AI tool writes. They overlap because clear, well-sourced answers help in both.
Will AI replace SEO?
No. AI features rely on pages that search engines can index, so SEO remains the base.
Is SEO better than AEO or GEO?
They do different jobs. SEO earns rankings and clicks, AEO earns direct answers, and GEO earns mentions. Start with SEO, then add the others based on your buyers’ questions.
Do I need special schema for AI search?
No. Google says no special schema is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Conclusion: Start With SEO, Then Add AEO and GEO
SEO gets your pages found, AEO makes your answers easy to lift out, and GEO makes your brand easy for AI tools to cite. The three work as layers, not rivals, and SEO stays the base under both. You do not need to master everything at once. Start with one important page, apply the six-step checklist, and add short answers and clear sources. Then test it in a few AI tools next month and compare the results with your Search Console data. Small, steady improvements compound across all three layers.
