Types of SEO: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide for Business Owners
Learn the main types of SEO in simple steps. See what each one does, which free tool to use and where to start, with a real example for every type.
Ask three people what SEO means and you will get three answers. One will say links. Another will say site speed. The third will say content. All three are right, because SEO has several parts, and each part fixes a different problem.
I’m Noor Fatima, and I have worked in SEO for more than five years. In this guide, I explain what SEO is first. Then I take you through each of the main types of SEO in plain words. Every type comes with a real example you can check, and a short set of steps with a tool you can open today.
What Is SEO? (In Plain Words)
SEO stands for search engine optimization. It means making your website easy for Google to find, read and trust. When you do it well, your pages show up higher when people search for what you sell. You then get visitors without paying for each click.
How Search Engines Find Your Pages
Google works in three steps. First, it crawls. Small programs called bots follow links from page to page. Next, it indexes. Google saves what it found in a giant library. Last, it ranks. When someone searches, Google picks the best pages from that library and puts them in order. If your page fails at one step, it cannot reach the next.
Why SEO Matters for Your Business
Search brings in a lot of visitors. A 2019 BrightEdge study found that organic search drove 53% of all website traffic. But a page does not rank just because it exists. Ahrefs checked about 14 billion pages and found that 96.55% get no traffic from Google. The main reasons were simple: nobody searched for the topic, the page had no backlinks, or it missed what searchers wanted. So you need a plan, not only a website.
SEO is not a trick, and it is not a one-time job. Google changes its systems often, and your rivals keep working. Be careful with anyone who promises you the top spot. Nobody can promise that.
The Main Types of SEO at a Glance
Four types sit at the core: technical, on-page, off-page and local SEO. Several more build on them. The table gives you the quick view, including one real example for each type. After the table, I explain every type in full.

1. Technical SEO: Make Your Site Easy to Reach
Technical SEO is the base layer under everything else. It checks whether Google can reach your pages, read them and load them fast. Picture a shop with a locked door. The best products in the world will not sell if nobody can get in. If you want a hand, I offer a technical SEO service.
Four things make up most technical work. First comes crawling: can bots follow your links, or does a blocked file stop them? Second comes indexing: does Google save your pages? Third comes structure: do your key pages sit a few clicks from the home page? Fourth comes speed, which Google measures with Core Web Vitals. Google’s “good” scores are 2.5 seconds or less for the main content, 200 milliseconds or less for the page to react, and 0.1 or less for layout jumps.
Technical SEO in Real Life: Vodafone
In 2021, Vodafone Italy ran an A/B test on a landing page. Both versions looked the same, and the only difference was speed. The team moved some page building from the browser to the server, sped up the main HTML and resized images. Largest Contentful Paint, the time the main content appears, improved by 31%. Total sales rose 8%, and the lead-to-visit rate rose 15%. You can read the full test in Vodafone’s web.dev case study.
How to Fix Your Technical SEO
- Open Screaming Frog and crawl your whole site.
- Open Google Search Console and read the Pages report to see which URLs Google skips, and why.
- Run your top five pages through PageSpeed Insights and fix the biggest warning first.
- Use the Screaming Frog report to fix broken links and redirect chains.
2. On-Page SEO: Make Every Page Clear
On-page SEO covers everything you can edit on a page. The title, headings, text, images, links and web address all count. Each one tells Google what the page is about. Each one also tells the reader whether to stay. My on-page SEO service covers this work.
Start with the title tag, the blue headline in the search results. Next, write one clear H1 and use H2s for the questions a reader will ask. Then add internal links, which are links from one of your pages to another. Use words that describe the target page, such as “local SEO checklist,” not “click here.” Finally, give each image a short file name and honest alt text.
On-Page SEO in Real Life: Cosmic’s Title Tags
In June 2026, Cosmic, a headless CMS company, rewrote the title tags and meta descriptions on a group of comparison pages. The new titles led with the search phrase, not the brand. They also stayed under about 60 characters. The team did not change the page text. One week later, clicks for “opus vs sonnet” rose from 17 to 36, and the average position moved from 4.66 to 3.10. This is a small test over a short time, so treat it as a sign, not proof. You can read the numbers in Cosmic’s write-up.
How to Fix Your On-Page SEO
- Open Google Search Console and find pages with many impressions but few clicks.
- Open SurferSEO, enter the page’s main keyword and note the topics the top pages cover that you miss.
- Rewrite the title and meta description in WordPress or your own CMS, and lead with the main phrase.
- Check in Screaming Frog that two or three related pages link to the new page.
3. Content SEO: Answer What People Really Want
Content SEO means writing pages that answer what people really want to know. A keyword is only a clue. The real question is why the person searched. I write pages built on that idea through my SEO blog writing service.
Most searches fall into four groups. People want to learn something, compare options, buy something or reach a certain site. If your page does not match the group, it will not rank well, however good the writing is. Google also looks for signs that a real expert wrote the page. It calls this E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. So add an author name, a short bio, real examples and links to your sources.
Content SEO in Real Life: HubSpot and “CRM”
Ahrefs studied HubSpot’s blog and site in 2024. For the search “crm,” which gets about 183,000 searches a month, HubSpot’s product page never reached the top spot. Later, a plain explainer page called “what is CRM” did rank. Ahrefs says this fits search intent: people who type “crm” often want to learn first and buy later. The lesson is simple. Give searchers the kind of page they came for. You can read the full breakdown in Ahrefs’ HubSpot SEO case study.
How to Fix Your Content SEO
- Open the Keyword Magic Tool in Semrush and list the questions around your topic.
- Search each phrase on Google and note what kind of pages rank.
- Outline the page in Google Docs, with the answer first and the detail after.
- Add an author bio and source links in WordPress before you publish.
- Check the page in Google Search Console after four weeks and update it.
4. Off-Page SEO: Earn Trust Beyond Your Site
Off-page SEO is what happens away from your own website. The biggest part is backlinks. A backlink is a link from another site to yours, and Google treats it a bit like a vote of confidence.
Not all votes count the same. One link from a site your customers trust beats a hundred links from junk pages. Brand mentions, reviews and press coverage also build trust. Buying links, however, breaks Google’s rules. I have spent more than three years on link building, and the rule has never changed: quality beats quantity. You can see how I work on my guest posting and link building page.
Off-Page SEO in Real Life: Backlinko’s Outreach Test
Brian Dean of Backlinko shared a method he called the Skyscraper Technique. First, he found a page that already earned many links. Next, he built a better, more up-to-date version. Then he emailed the sites that linked to the old page. He pulled the backlinks into a spreadsheet with Semrush, cut the list to 160 real prospects and sent each one a personal email. Seventeen sites linked back, a success rate of about 11%. He reported that organic traffic to his site rose 110% in 14 days. That is his own report, so results will vary. See the details in Backlinko’s case study.
You can also earn links by building something useful, because people link to tools they use. Ahrefs found that HubSpot’s free email signature generator has about 22,700 backlinks and around 134,000 monthly organic visits (these are Ahrefs’ estimates from 2024).
How to Fix Your Off-Page SEO
- Open Ahrefs Site Explorer, enter a rival’s domain and open the Backlinks report.
- Move the list to Google Sheets and delete forums and directories.
- Send short, personal emails from Gmail that offer your better resource.
- Check the Links report in Google Search Console each month to see who links to you.
5. Local SEO: Get Found by Nearby Customers
Local SEO helps people near you find your business. It targets searches like “dentist near me” and the map block at the top of Google. If you have a shop, a clinic or a service area, it often brings the fastest results.
Google says it ranks local results mainly by relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance means how well your profile matches the search. Distance means how far you are from the person. Prominence means how well known you are, including your reviews and links. You cannot pay for a better spot, and you cannot change where you are. You can, however, finish your profile and earn good reviews. Learn more about my local SEO service.
Local SEO in Real Life: The Johnson Firm
EverSpark Interactive, a marketing agency, reports on its work with the Johnson Firm, a law firm in southwest Louisiana. The firm’s billboards were not doing well. The agency improved the firm’s Google Business Profile and its practice-area pages. Over one year, it reports that calls from the profile rose 172%. The firm also grew from two attorneys to nine. This is the agency’s own report. Read it in the Johnson Firm case study.
How to Fix Your Local SEO
- Open Google Business Profile, fill in every field and pick your main category with care.
- Search your own service and city in Google Maps, and note who ranks above you.
- Copy your review link from Google Business Profile and send it to happy customers.
- Build one page per service area in WordPress, with real details like landmarks and team names.
6. E-Commerce SEO: Help Your Store Rank and Sell
E-commerce SEO helps online stores rank for what shoppers search. The goal is not only more visitors. The goal is visitors who buy.
Shoppers often start on category pages, so those pages deserve attention first. Many stores leave them bare, with only a grid of products. Another common problem is product text copied from the maker. That makes your page look the same as every other store’s. Filters can also create thousands of near-copy pages, so decide which ones Google should see.
E-Commerce SEO in Real Life: Orranje
Orranje’s category pages had no text. Kaweb, an agency, added content to those pages and aimed them at phrases with more searches. The agency reports 2,300 more keyword rankings and a 38% rise in organic traffic. It also says organic revenue nearly doubled within one month. Its headline claims a 45% revenue lift, but the page does not explain how it counted that figure, so treat the exact numbers with care. See the Orranje case study.
How to Fix Your E-Commerce SEO
- Open Google Search Console, filter the Performance report by your category URLs and find pages with many impressions but few clicks.
- Use Semrush to find the higher-volume phrases each category should target.
- Add a short intro and buying advice to each category in Shopify or WooCommerce.
- Run Screaming Frog to find product text you copied, and rewrite it in your own words.
- Redirect products you no longer sell to the closest match in your store platform.
7. International SEO: Show the Right Page to the Right Country
International SEO shows each visitor the right language or country version of your site. A shopper in Spain should see Spanish text and euro prices. Without that, many visitors will leave, and Google may show the wrong version.
You have three ways to set up your URLs. A country domain looks like example.es. A subdomain looks like es.example.com. A subfolder looks like example.com/es/. Then you add hreflang tags, which tell Google how your versions relate. Keep in mind that Google treats hreflang as a hint, not a rule, so make each version truly different. Real local words, prices and payment options matter more than a word-for-word translation. If you sell in one country only, you can skip this type.
International SEO in Real Life: Three Live Setups
Three well-known sites show the three setups. Wikipedia uses subdomains, such as en.wikipedia.org and es.wikipedia.org. Amazon uses country domains, such as amazon.co.uk and amazon.de. Apple uses subfolders, such as apple.com/uk and apple.com/de. Open each one and look at the web address, the language and the prices. For most small businesses, subfolders are the easiest to run, because they keep all your authority on one domain.
How to Fix Your International SEO
- Open the Countries view in Google Search Console and see where your visitors live.
- Pick one URL setup and write it down before you build anything.
- Run a crawl in Screaming Frog and read its hreflang report for missing links.
- Ask a native speaker to review each language version in Google Docs.
8. Mobile SEO: Make Your Site Work on Phones
Mobile SEO makes your site fast and easy to use on a phone. Google looks at the mobile version of your pages first. If something is missing on mobile, Google treats it as missing. So a site that looks perfect on a laptop can still struggle.
The most common problems are slow pages, tiny buttons, text that needs pinching and pop-ups that cover the screen. Mobile pages also tend to load slower than desktop pages. In the 2025 Web Almanac data, only about 62% of mobile sites passed the loading metric, a lower pass rate than the other two Core Web Vitals.
Mobile SEO in Real Life: Redbus
Redbus, a bus ticket booking site, fixed layout jumps and slow loading on its mobile pages. According to web.dev, its layout shift score dropped from 1.65 to 0. The company also reported that its mobile conversion rate rose 80% to 100%. You can read the full list in web.dev’s Core Web Vitals business impact page.
How to Fix Your Mobile SEO
- Open PageSpeed Insights and run your top pages on the mobile tab.
- Open the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console and fix the pages marked poor.
- Use device mode in Chrome DevTools to spot buttons that are too small or text that hides.
- Pick up a real phone and buy or sign up like a customer would.
9. SEO for AI Search: Get Quoted in AI Answers
AI tools now answer many questions at the top of the results. GEO and AEO are names for making your content easy for those tools to use and quote. It sounds new. Google says, however, that optimizing for its AI features is still SEO, because they rely on the same core ranking systems.
That advice covers Google only, so other chatbots may behave differently. What helps in all cases is clear: short direct answers, named authors, original data and clean technical basics. Pages Google cannot crawl cannot feed an answer. I offer both GEO and AEO services.
AI Search SEO in Real Life: Ahrefs’ AI Overview Studies
In July 2025, Ahrefs studied 1.9 million citations from 1 million AI Overviews. It found that 76% of the cited pages ranked in Google’s top 10. A later Ahrefs analysis of 4 million AI Overview URLs found that only 38% of cited pages also ranked in the top 10. Ahrefs says its new method reads the data differently, so the two numbers do not compare directly. The takeaway is simple. Good rankings still help, but they are not the only way into an AI answer.
How to Fix Your AI Search SEO
- Search your ten key questions on Google and note which sites the AI Overview cites.
- Add a short, direct answer under each heading in WordPress or your CMS.
- Add author names, sources and your own data to each page in Google Docs before you publish.
- Watch which question-style searches bring clicks in Google Search Console.
10. White-Hat, Gray-Hat and Black-Hat SEO: Play by the Rules
These three do not describe a task. They describe how you play. White-hat SEO follows Google’s rules. Black-hat SEO breaks them with tricks like hidden text, bought links and mass-made pages. Gray-hat sits in the middle, and Google can label those tactics as spam at any time. Negative SEO is a darker cousin: it means attacking a rival’s rankings with spam links or fake reviews. Google’s spam policies cover mass-made pages whether people, software or both create them.
Black-Hat SEO in Real Life: JCPenney in 2011
In February 2011, the New York Times reported that JCPenney ranked first on Google for terms like “dresses,” “bedding” and “area rugs.” The paid links behind those rankings sat on many unrelated sites. Google confirmed the practice broke its rules and made a manual change. JCPenney said it did not approve the links and worked to remove them. Search Engine Watch covered it in NY Times outs JC Penney’s shady link building. Even a huge brand could not keep shortcuts working.
How to Stay Safe
- Open the Manual Actions report in Google Search Console once a month.
- Set a backlink alert in Ahrefs so a sudden spike does not slip past you.
- Review your old guest posts in your CMS and remove anything spammy.
Which Type of SEO Should You Start With?
You do not need every type at once. Most businesses begin with two or three. Find your situation in the table, then start there.
| Your situation | Start with | Then add |
|---|---|---|
| Local business | Local SEO | On-page SEO |
| Online store | E-commerce and technical SEO | Content SEO |
| Blog or publisher | Content and on-page SEO | Off-page SEO |
| New website | Technical and on-page SEO | Content SEO |
| B2B or service company | Content and on-page SEO | Off-page SEO |
| Selling in several countries | International SEO | Local SEO for each market |
Conclusion: Start Small and Keep Going
SEO works best as one system. Technical work lets Google reach your pages. On-page and content work make those pages useful. Off-page and local work build trust. Knowing the types of SEO helps you pick the right place to start, so choose one type this week and check your progress in a month.

FAQs
How long does SEO take to show results?
Most sites need a few months before gains look steady. Competition changes the timeline. Quick fixes, like a broken title or an indexing error, can help sooner. Lasting rankings need steady, patient work, so check your numbers monthly, not daily.
Can I do SEO on my own?
Yes, you can handle the basics with free tools. Write helpful pages, fix your titles and set up your business profile. Hire a specialist for site moves, big technical problems or crowded niches, where one mistake can cost real traffic.
How much does SEO cost?
Cost depends on your site size, your competition and your goals. A small local site needs less work than a large online store. I scope each project after a short call. You can see my pricing page for current packages.
What should I look for when I hire an SEO specialist?
Look for a clear process, honest reports and examples of past work. Walk away from anyone who guarantees rankings or sells cheap links. A good specialist explains each action in plain words and shows you the data behind every choice.
How do I know if SEO is working?
Track organic clicks, impressions and new leads each month. Impressions usually rise first, then clicks, then enquiries. Compare the same month across years to avoid seasonal swings. If those numbers climb together, your plan clearly works and deserves more investment.
